The Ring Type Joint (RTJ) gasket is a forged ring that fits into the machined groove of an RTJ flange. The ring type joint gaskets are either octagonal or oval in cross-section. RTJ gaskets are generally used for high pressure and high-temperature applications. It is widely used in refinery, petrochemical and oil field drilling industries. The Ring type joints are manufactured as per ASME B16.20.
The axial compressive load (due to bolt tightening) act on the Ring type joint(RTJ) gasket causing them to deform and flow into irregularities of flange grooves. Due to this, a metal-to-metal contact is formed between gasket and flange that makes a seal.
Standard materials such as Stainless Steel (SS 316, SS 304), Soft Iron (SI), Low Carbon Steel (LCS) and other materials on request.
Ring joint gaskets are suitable for high pressure and high temperature applications. The gaskets are available in R, RX, BX styles, and oval/octagonal profiles. The octagonal cross section has a higher sealing efficiency than the oval and would be the preferred gasket.
R Type Ring Joint Gaskets are manufactured to the specifications of both API 6A and ASME B16.20. They are manufactured in both oval and octagonal configurations which are interchangeable on modern flange grooves.
RX Ring Joint Gaskets are a pressure-energized modification of the standard style R ring joint gasket. RX gaskets are designed to fit the same flange grooves as a standard style R.
BX Ring Joint Gaskets are only suitable for API 6 BX type flanges. These gaskets are used for the Class rating of 2000 to 20000 psi. The BX type gasket has a pressure passage hole for pressure equalization on each sealing face sides.
The oval section ring joints were originally designed for the now obsolete round bottom groove. Both the Oval and the Octagonal cross section are interchangeable on the flat bottom groove design.
The Octagonal cross section has a higher sealing efficiency than the Oval cross section and is therefore preferred.
This is a seal consisting of a ring joint gasket totally encapsulated in a profiled nitrile rubber coating.
The rubber coating provides added sealing and protects the flange surfaces as well as providing corrosion protection. Rubber coated gaskets are used for pressure testing to minimize damage to the flanges.

Special RTJ gasket comes with a hole in the center for pressure equalization in subsea pipeline application. You can see the different type of RTJ gasket in the image.
